CBD oil has been gaining notoriety and momentum as the next best thing, at least when it comes to health and wellness (and beauty, for that matter). Advocates and even first time users claim CBD oil can and has helped with a variety of conditions, including chronic pain, anxiety, depression, diabetes, and even cancer.

But it’s not only its therapeutic attributes that have sparked such widespread interest in CBD in recent years. CBD is also nonpsychoactive (meaning it does not get you high), making it a safe and effective option for patients who may be concerned about the mind altering effects of other cannabinoids such as THC. Another positive aspect of CBD as an all natural herbal remedy is that according to the World Health Organization (WHO) CBD has little to no negative side effects.

Because of cannabis’ long-time status as an illegal Schedule 1 drug in the United States, research on CBD oil in the United States  is still in its infancy, but thankfully, the laws are changing and more research is being conducted. Countries in Europe, Canada, and Israel are leading the way in cannabis research.

Here’s what we know now:

1. Naturally Reduces Chronic Pain

Of all the reasons that people use CBD today, pain is the most common.

Studies show CBD interacts with receptors in the brain and immune system to reduce inflammation and alleviate pain. A study in the Journal of Experimental Medicine, found that CBD significantly reduces chronic inflammation  and pain in mice and rats. A 2008 review identified that CBD offered effective pain relief without inducing adverse side effects in patients.

People tend to use prescription or over-the-counter drugs to relieve stiffness and pain, including chronic pain, but with the new evidence of CBD as a more natural alternative, people are choosing CBD. WIth CBD as a possible alternative to opioids for chronic pain relief, this may lead to fewer opioid-related deaths.

When pain is localized, topical products can be applied and are very beneficial. Topicals affect the cells in the target area and penetrate through several layers of tissue offering immediate relief, but do not cross the blood-brain barrier and are non-psychoactive.

2. Naturally Reduces Inflammation

CBD is also widely known by researchers as a natural anti-inflammatory. Of all the qualities that CBD offers, it’s anti-inflammatory properties are arguably the most well-researched of the bunch. Being successfully utilized to treat almost all digestive conditions, as well as many other medical challenges, it is now looked upon as the most effective anti-inflammatory drug available – even beating out traditional options.

Many studies have found that CBD can reduce joint inflammation and other inflammatory pain in rats, without side effects. This may point to potential relief from arthritis, fibromyalgia, and multiple sclerosis in humans (3).

Delivery for internal and muscular inflammation is recommended to be taken orally (sublingually, ingested, or vaporized) to maximize potential benefits.

As with pain relief, when inflammation is localized, topical products can be applied and are very beneficial. A study published in 2016 that investigated the effects of CBD on rats with arthritis, showed that the application of CBD gel significantly reduced joint swelling. Their study concluded that topical CBD application was a successful treatment for arthritis pain and related behaviors, as well as for general inflammation — all without any evident side effects.

3. Naturally Reduces Anxiety and Depression

While CBD is most commonly used to treat physiological symptoms such as pain, there is growing research that indicates it can also be used for mental health conditions, including depression and anxiety. A study by the University of São Paulo found that CBD significantly reduces subjective anxiety, leading researchers to conclude that “These results suggest that CBD reduces anxiety in [social anxiety disorder] and that this is related to its effects on activity in limbic and paralimbic brain areas.”

In various animal studies, CBD has shown notable anti-anxiety and antidepressant-like effects.

Whether it's social anxiety or generalized anxiety disorder, CBD may be the solution you're looking for.

If you're considering using CBD as a replacement for your current mood disorder or mental health medication, first consult with your psychiatrist and/or physician.

4. Alleviates Cancer Symptoms and May Have Anti-Tumor Effects

Research indicates that CBD may be valuable in the treatment of cancer in a number of different ways. Both the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute recognize CBD oil’s potential in slowing and reducing the spread of cancer cells. While they emphasize that CBD is not a cure, plenty of research shows cannabis have an antitumor effect and can amplify the death of tumor cells in both colon cancer and leukemia. In addition, investigations have shown that CBD can be used to stop the spread of cancer cells in cervical cancer cells.

It is important to note that these CBD and cancer studies are pre-clinical, meaning they’re not conducted on human or even mammalian test subjects, and the findings – while promising – should not be construed as conclusive proof that CBD can cure cancer.

CBD is also effective in lowering cancer-related pain, as well as nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy.

5. Reduces Seizures in Epilepsy

Much of the research on CBD has looked at its seizure-reducing effects. In fact, this year, the FDA approved a CBD-based drug to treat seizures, which was a huge step in making this natural medicine more available to the public. To date, of all the reported health benefits of CBD oil, this has been the most researched (and proven) use.

Seizures occur when there’s a dramatic fluctuation of electrical activity in the brain. Over the years, a number of high profile cases have raised awareness of CBD’s anti-seizure properties, but it’s only recently that science has been able to confirm this link. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in The New England Journal of Medicine explored the effect of CBD medication on young adults with Dravet syndrome, a rare type of epilepsy with seizures that are often induced by fever. Those who received CBD experienced saw their seizure frequency drop by a median of 38.9 percent.

6. Displays Antipsychotic Properties

In addition to mood disorders such as anxiety and depression, CBD is also known to help patients with psychosis.

Recent research, and  animal studies, have suggested that "CBD has a pharmacological profile similar to that of atypical antipsychotic drugs," and additionally have encouraged more research to evaluate its ability to treat similar illnesses and disorders, like bipolar disorder. Some doctors have called it a legitimate antipsychotic, and a study from just this year called CBD "a new class of treatment for the disorder."

If you're considering using CBD as a replacement for your current mood disorder or mental health medication, first consult with your psychiatrist and/or physician.

7. Helps Treat Substance Abuse

Interestingly, CBD counteracts the psychoactive properties of THC, meaning it may help those addicted to marijuana.

A pilot study published in Addictive Behaviors found that tobacco smokers who used inhalers containing CBD smoked fewer cigarettes than usual and had no further cravings for nicotine. A similar review, published in Neurotherapeutics found that CBD may be a promising treatment for people with opioid addiction disorders.

In similar studies, it’s been shown to help with addiction to other substances like tobacco, alcohol and even heroin (16, 17, 18). More research is necessary, but these findings suggest that CBD may help to prevent or reduce withdrawal symptoms.

 8. Lowers Risk of Diabetes & Heart Disease

A rarely discussed health benefit of CBD oil is how it can reduce the risk of developing diabetes. Scientists believe that CBD could have the potential to help treat type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease because of its anti-inflammatory properties.

In a study published in Neuropharmacology, researchers set out to explore what effect CBD would have on non-obese diabetes-prone female mice. Only 32 percent of the mice that received the CBD was diagnosed with diabetes, compared to 100 percent of the untreated group.

More research needs to be done, but there is evidence CBD can protect the heart against vascular damage caused by high glucose, inflammation, and type 2 diabetes, according to a 2013 study published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology. The European Journal of Pharmacology also published a study earlier this year that pointed toward CBD aiding heart health. Perhaps what is most interesting is that CBD could mitigate the negative cardiovascular effects of stress and high blood pressure, providing a potential alternative to traditional medications used to lower blood pressure.

9. Help treat Sleep Disorders (Insomnia, Sleep Apnea)

If you're looking to catch up on sleep, or you're fighting a legitimate bout of insomnia, CBD may be able to help you fall—and stay—asleep. Some smaller studies have shown that CBD at bedtime could improve sleep, and a study on rats in 2013 showed that CBD increased total sleep time. That said, Jordan Tishler, M.D., noted that the rat study found "at high doses, CBD can cause insomnia and jitteriness"—so do your research on the appropriate dosage for each product before you go overboard.

CBD oil is an incredibly valuable medicine that can be used to treat a range of health conditions. While this article is far from an exhaustive list, it does highlight just a few of the ways CBD can potentially benefit your health.
